Cartier returns with Tank looking through the apertures
In its rich history, the French jewellery-watchmaking house has presented watches of all possible forms. At this, they are probably the best. Cartier was among the first to unify the signature art deco style with oriental influences and precious stones and specific details in watches and jewellery. With its minimalism and rectangular geometry the Tank is one of the most iconic Cartier timepieces. The Cartier Tank was worn by pop icons such as Andy Warhol and Jackie Kennedy. This year, one of the most sought-for models among watch lovers has been brought back to life.
Two interpretations of the living legend
Since the 1920s, only a limited number of Cartier Tank à Guichets models have been made. The name of the watch also hides its meaning. The term “à guichets” can be translated from French as “through the apertures”. It is the Tank model in rectangular geometry in which time is read digitally, through the windows for hours and minutes. A century ago, the design somewhat brutalist for today’s perception was a futuristic concept uniting function and form.
This time, the legendary piece was introduced in two variants – one remains loyal to the original, while the other is its reinterpretation. Both models have the crown at 12 o’clock, the difference is revealed in the position of the windows. The new interpretation of the timepiece has an aperture for the jumping hour at 10 o’clock and turned for 90 degrees counter-clockwise. The aperture for displaying minutes was shifted to 4 o’clock, which is typical for the style of car drivers. The timepieces are available in the case made of yellow or rose gold and platinum.
Cartier Tank Louis with automatic movement
Among all the Cartier timepieces and their variants, Tank Louis is considered the classic of the line. However, the king of the rectangular elegance with rounded edges brings a breath of fresh air. Most frequently it is found with hand-wound movement, while the new Tank LC Automatic offers automatic winding. Historically speaking, hand-wound movements enabled thinner cases and the new LC Automatic is only 8.18mm thick. It is 38.1mm long and 27.75mm wide.
Regarding the form, Cartier does not bring any major changes which is, considering the fame and renown of the brand, expected. We are reading Roman numerals arranged around a square and a crown with a sapphire detail. However, a watchful eye will see a change on the white dial. The pattern stretching from the hands handle to the edge of the case differs from the existing models, which could clearly state that it has an automatic movement. It is available in a case made of yellow or rose gold.
Panthers and diamonds are forever
Side by side with timepieces, Cartier also presented new pieces of jewellery or a combination of both. The panther is the iconic symbol of Cartier’s history and the first animal muse in the world of haute couture and luxury.
